This Robot Can Draw Your Blood

This Robot Can Draw Your Blood

Some people are champs about having blood drawn and even go back as often as they're allowed to donate blood. If you're one of those people that's frickin great. Go pat yourself on the back. If not you are probably thinking that you don't want a robot coming anywhere near you with a needle. But the robot might actually be the better bet.

Citizen plans crowdfunded takeover of Canadian carrier, raises a couple hundred

You'd think a carrier takeover funded by the proletariat would have to be hostile, right? Heck, no. Canadian Valya Michael loves Mobilicity, all the way from its headquarters down to its little cell towers, and he fears a serious loss of commercial competition if the embattled company should fail. So he's started a $400,000,000 campaign (in the northern currency, that is) to buy it out, clear its debts and invest in better coverage and customer service. We have no idea what Indiegogo, Mobilicity or the telecoms regulator will do if the funding target is achieved, but they all have plenty of time to draft a response seeing as the current total stands at $213. Meanwhile, the fate of that other big Indiegogo project seems almost as uncertain.

Karl Rove Focuses on Senate GOP Takeover in Fundraising Email

Can the Republican Party pick up six Senate seats in the 2014 election and in the process retake the majority in the U.S. Senate? Republican strategist Karl Rove thinks so.

Rove, a Fox News contributor, is using the possibility of a Senate takeover as a fundraising tool in his latest appeal to GOP donors.

A former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush, Rove sent an email to donors on Sunday citing favorable polls and remarks from former New York Times number cruncher Nate Silver as leading indicators that the GOP has a chance to take back the Senate in 2014, so long as the monetary support is there.

Latest: Do You Support Giving Illegals Citizenship? Vote Here Now

"Washington is buzzing with the news! Even liberal prognosticators now admit Republicans can pick up six seats to take the U.S. Senate in 2014," Rove's email reads.

In his email suggesting a Republican majority in the Senate is possible, Rove noted that six of the seven Democratic Senate seats up for reelection are in states that were won by Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney in the 2012 race by a margin of 10 percent or greater.

Rove also highlighted the recent announcement by former Montana Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer that he will not run for the state's open Senate seat in 2014.

"The GOP can win a Senate majority, but it won't be easy. Your support is vital to ensuring Republicans have the resources necessary for victory," Rove's email reads. "Early fundraising is key. Harry Reid knows that: that?s why he announced he?ll try raising $125 million to beat Republicans."

In his attempt to convince GOP donors to make a contribution to the Republican initiative some 16 months before elections are held, Rove also cites "Obama campaign?s favorite number cruncher, Nate Silver."

Editor's Note: Should ObamaCare Be Repealed? Vote in Urgent National Poll

In a New York Times "FiveThirtyEight" blog, Silver wrote: "Best guess, after assigning probabilities of the likelihood of a GOP pickup in each state, is that Republicans will end up with somewhere between 50 and 51 Senate seats after 2014, putting them right on the threshold of a majority."

"Not only is Republican candidate recruitment going well and Democratic recruitment badly, but issues are helping," wrote Rove, "with Obamacare, the sluggish job picture, scandals and an incompetent and out-of-touch White House shaping the political landscape."

If Republicans are able to win back the Senate, it will be the first time since losing the majority in 2006.

National Paralympic Day to be held on September 7 to celebrate London 2012, announces Mayor

By Duncan Mackay

London 2012 Paralympics Opening CeremonyJuly 28 - The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will host a special Paralympic Day on September 7 to mark the first anniversary of London 2012, it has been announced.

The free event, launched today by London Mayor Boris Johnson, will feature top Paralympic athletes and disabled performers.?

National Paralympic Day will be aimed at disabled and non-disabled people and will be the thrilling grand finale to a summer of celebrations marking the one year anniversary of London 2012, Johnson claimed.

Organised by the Mayor of London, The London Legacy Development Corporation and the British Paralympic Association (BPA), the day will be held alongside the Mayor's Liberty Festival, an annual showcase of Deaf and disabled artists. .

Amongst the highlights will be "The Limbless Knight", a aerial and sway performance from award winning theatre company Graeae, which has been co-commissioned by the Legacy Company and Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF), the arts organisation that produces Liberty.

Graeae's artistic director Jenny Sealey was joint artistic director of last year's Paralympic Opening Ceremony, along with Bradley Hemmings, artistic director of GDIF.

There will be a special appearance from Andrea Begley, who recently triumphed on the BBC Television series "The Voice", plus street theatre, outdoor dance, mass choreography, visual arts, live music, film and food.

Another attraction will be "Miracoco Luminarium", a monumental interactive light sculpture.

There will also be a series of have a go sports activities in the north of the Park and inside the Copper Box Arena.

"This event will be a fitting finale to another outstanding summer of sport, culture and entertainment in this magnificent new park. London's Paralympic Games were astonishingly successful, with superb medal-winning performances by our brilliant athletes," said Johnson.

"But they also transformed the way we think about disability.

"This will be a fantastic opportunity to see some of those world-beating athletes in action once again and to enjoy magical performances by some of the finest disabled artists in the UK.

"It's also another chance to enjoy our fabulous new Park."

National Paralympic Day is the latest initiative launched to ensure that there is a legacy from London 2012.?

"The performances of the ParalympicsGB athletes inspired the nation and changed the way people think about disability," said Tim Hollingsworth, chief executive of the BPA.

"National Paralympic Day will recreate some of the wonder of the Paralympic Games and will build on the momentum that was started so successfully last year."

Rory MacDonald wins UFC on Fox 8 snooze fest over Jake Ellenberger

The co-main event at UFC on Fox 8 was supposed to be a chance for the next welterweight contender to make a statement. The bout between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger figured to be an exciting bout between the two most likely men to fight for the welterweight belt after champion Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks fight. Instead, MacDonald won a decision in a snooze fest.

MacDonald established a jab early in the fight, and continued to use it throughout the bout. He didn't come up with big moves that could finish the fight, though. Instead, he was content to rely on the jab again and again.

Ellenberger played the fight even more cautiously than MacDonald. He couldn't find a way to avoid MacDonald's jab and set up a strike or a takedown. The Division II wrestling All-American couldn't get a takedown until late in the third round. This fight was his big opportunity to get to the championship shot, but his cautiousness kept him from getting the win.

The crowd was unrelenting in their boos, and even UFC president Dana White was disappointed.

"I obviously look to finish fights, but he?s a good fighter, so what can you do? I think I had him worried with the elbows because he didn?t want to come near me after that. That wasn?t my game plan, but I accomplished what I needed to do," MacDonald said after the fight.

Though MacDonald got the win, there is no guarantee he will get a title shot any time soon after that performance. He trains with St-Pierre, and appeared to learn from his safe, but not exciting, approach. At 15-1, he has the resume for a title shot. But will the UFC want to feature him if this is the fight fans remember?

NIH Begins Gene Therapy Trial for Parkinson s Disease

All eyes were on Perry Cohen when he froze at the microphone. His voice failed him. He couldn't read his notes. Eventually, the once-powerful Parkinson's disease speaker had to be helped off the stage halfway through his speech. That was in February 2012, but the memory of that day is emblazoned in his mind. "It was the adrenaline and the pressure of speaking -- it drained all the dopamine out," Cohen says, referring to the brain chemical that is found lacking in the neurodegenerative disorder. "That's why my symptoms got worse." When Cohen learned he had Parkinson's disease 17 years ago his symptoms were subtle. In the past couple years, however, the deterioration of his nervous system has become increasingly obvious, ultimately threatening to silence one of the most prominent voices in the Parkinson's patient community. Cohen is now first in line to try a novel treatment he hopes will halt or even reverse the symptoms of his Parkinson's disease. Two months ago he became the inaugural patient to undergo a gene therapy treatment led by the National Institutes of Health. The trial attempts to devise an intervention for Parkinson's disease at the root of the problem: protecting dopamine in the brain. Researchers in this trial are attempting to surgically deliver a gene into the body that will make a natural protein to protect dopaminergic neurons, the brain cells attacked by the disease. To date no Parkinson's treatment is geared toward reversing the progression of Parkinson's disease. For patients in the Parkinson's community Cohen has become a squeaky wheel that cannot be ignored, helping researchers understand more about the patient experience and how to utilize their input in procedures and patient care. A scientist with a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in organization studies, Cohen says his background helped fuel his ability to bring people together to take action to advocate for people with Parkinson's disease. His persistency also helped keep him on researchers' radars when they were hunting for eligible patients for the trial. As a savvy medical consumer, Cohen knew to be choosy about volunteering for a research trial, "Patients have one ticket to get on an experimental treatment train. Once you have used your ticket you're used up and we have to be careful how we choose it," Cohen says, pointing to the requirements of the current NIH clinical trial. Since his diagnosis in 1996 Cohen's whole life morphed until his disease became the center of his universe. The 67-year-old former healthcare consultant spoke before the Institute of Medicine on protecting human research participants and he testified before Congress. He founded a new Parkinson's disease support group in the D.C.-area for individuals like him who were relatively young and mobile when they received their diagnosis. His friendships grew out of his relationships at the support group and through the scientific meetings he would attend where he often spoke about the role of patients in research. Early on he decided that he wanted to be part of a gene therapy experiment and waited patiently until the right investigation came along. He volunteered for more than 15 clinical or observational studies -- though none involved brain surgery. He also turned down deep brain stimulation, an increasingly common treatment for Parkinson's disease, because he knew it would disqualify him from any attempt to insert genes into the brain. Essentially deep brain stimulation involves implanting a "pacemaker for the brain," that will regulate neural activity and block the abnormal nerve signals that cause tremor and other Parkinson's symptoms. The procedure does not slow the progression of the disease; it just helps facilitate communication among the nerve cells in the brain. The gene therapy trial had three main requirements, which Cohen made sure he fulfilled. To be eligible, a patient would have to be in the advanced stages of the disease --check. He would have had to avoid any other brain surgery and cleared other exclusionary factors --check. And he would have to be told that the procedure was part of a Phase I trial -- meaning it was geared toward testing for safety and that there was no guarantee it would help him -- check. But Cohen had done his homework on the trial and his hopes were high. He had followed the evolution of the science on this type of gene therapy through its early animal trials and he eagerly anticipated when the human trials would finally wind their way through the reviews process, allowing him to sign up. He also personally spoke with almost all the investigators involved in this area of research. And, it goes without saying, he had his fingers crossed that this treatment would work. In May of 2013, Cohen went under the knife. A team of surgeons made an incision across the top of his head and drilled two holes in his skull. They inserted needles on both sides of his brain and used an MRI scan to monitor their work while they pumped in a virus solution containing the genes they hope will serve as an elixir to save dopaminergic cells. Now, Cohen has returned to his daily life and is anxiously awaiting signs that might indicate whether the procedure worked--something NIH investigators say may not be detectable until this autumn. When Cohen was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a stranger passing him on the street would not have known anything was wrong, but as his disease progressed, the tremors often associated with the disease began to show up along with the insomnia and the "Parkinson's mask" that caused his muscles to droop and look rigid. Now, "I take short steps, I can't even walk half a mile anymore," he says. He has what are commonly called "shuffles" in Parkinson's disease -- referring to his difficulty maintaining balance and the appearance that he is lurching forward when he stops walking. Now he is often short of breath and speaks in a raspy, halting voice. He had to abruptly end interviews with Scientific American on two separate occasions when his symptoms acted up. His five daily medications may help improve his symptoms and combat his lethargy, but there is no treatment that changes the arc of the disease. Today his energies are focused on his own health; he is waiting for any clues that the genes were successfully integrated into his system -- anything from his involuntary movements becoming less prominent after he takes his usual medication to indications that he can walk and move faster between his medication doses than before the procedure. One thing the disease certainly teaches is patience. Follow Scientific American on Twitter @SciAm and @SciamBlogs. Visit ScientificAmerican.com for the latest in science, health and technology news.

Amid scandal, Weiner tours storm-damaged NYC home

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner met Superstorm Sandy victims on Staten Island as he tried to move past the sexting scandal threatening to derail his attempted political comeback.

The former congressman traveled to the furthest reaches of the city Friday to tour the ruined home of Joseph Cardinale, who is still struggling to rebuild after the deadly storm knocked his house off its foundation.

But even in that setting Weiner couldn't escape the scandal. Neighborhood resident Peg Brunda confronted the candidate, telling him he didn't have the "moral authority" to lead the city.

Weiner said he just wants to give residents a chance to decide for themselves.

So far Weiner has resisted calls for him to abandon the race.

Neighbours and those who shared a home with a Scouts Canada volunteer ? who also worked as a lifeguard at a city pool ? who is accused of molesting three boys are ?very surprised? at the allegations.

Scott Graham Stanley, 30, faces 18 charges, including sexual interference, sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching and luring against three boys, all under 16.

Police allege the incidents took place from Jan. 2012 to as recently as July 19, while he was a volunteer with Scouts, and involves children 11-to-14 years old in the Ottawa area. Investigators also believe there may be more victims.

Officers arrived in an unmarked car at Stanley?s home, which he rents with three other men, on Thursday. He was taken out in handcuffs, according to neighbours and roommates. Officers also searched the home, seizing a computer.

Stanley also for years worked as a lifeguard at the Stittsville-based Goulbourn Recreation Complex and as a swim coach with the Goulbourn Sea Hawks swim club, said those who knew him.

One of the roommates met Stanley six years ago while working at the pool. He moved into the home in February, following an eviction.

?I never had a problem with him,? said the man, who did not want his name used. ?He helped me out with a lot of stuff. To me, knowing him the longest, it?s very shocking.?

Others had heard him say what they felt were inappropriate comments about children, but were ?surprised it went this far.?

Stanley was let go from the Scouts about a month ago, said roommates. About two weeks ago, he lost his job at the pool.

City officials said Stanley was an aquatics supervisor, who is currently suspended without pay.

Last week, Stanley cleared his online social networking sites of photos, his roommates said.

A graduate of Algonquin College, he also worked with teens at camps and churches, according to a biography that was posted to the Sea Hawks website, but has since been pulled down.

When he wasn?t working or volunteering, his roommates said Stanley spent a lot of time alone in his room.

The heavy set, bespectacled and unshaven Stanley appeared in court on Friday, wearing a T-shirt reading ?I?m not a hippie I just hike a lot.?

He was banned from communicating with anyone under the age of 18, or the alleged victims and their families.

Stanley will spend the weekend in jail before attending a bail hearing set for Monday.

Stanley was suspended on May 12 for not following its child and youth safety policies and procedures, according to Andrew Price, chief commissioner of Scouts Canada.

Shortly after, Scouts Canada shared all of the information it had on the situation with Ottawa police, although the organization did not elaborate, except to say they are co-operating with the police investigation.

Scout leaders are required to complete ?rigorous training and police screening procedures? before being allowed to work with young people, said Scouts Canada, and prior to May this year, Stanley had met those requirements.

His most recent police record check was successfully completed in June 2012.

Scouts Canada said ?nothing is more important? than the safety of young people in their care.

UCP Inc: Hybrid Real Estate Play Offers The Most Short-Term ...

UCP, Inc (UCP) is a west coast land developer / homebuilder that recently completed its IPO just over a week ago hitting the public market after the close of business on July 17th. The IPO priced at $15 per share, which was at the low end of the expected range of $15 - $17 per share. The IPO hit the market at an inopportune time, as the frenzy and fear over rising interest rates was at a fever pitch with its greatest impact being felt by housing related names. Since the time of the IPO, shares of UCP have traded down to about $14 per share. The opportunity for investors to profit from an investment in this company is due to multiple discrete items. In my opinion, the upside opportunity from an investment in UCP is greater than any other name tied to real estate today. The homebuilders have rallied significantly from their record lows set over a year ago. Housing and material supply companies are the same story. I believe the market does not currently understand how to price UCP. Is it a homebuilder or a land developer? This uncertainty from a pricing standpoint leads to a price-to-book valuation that is half the level seen by some of the most fairly valued homebuilders today. I would argue that UCP will enjoy the benefits of its startup homebuilding operation and how this side of the business will most likely double annually for years to come. From the land side of the business, the company owns more than enough land to fuel its homebuilding operation. This land was also acquired at dirt cheap prices, and the funds raised from the IPO will allow UCP to develop its land holdings and continue to sell certain developed lots to other builders for significant profits. At the end of the day, this is a company with cheap land, minimal fixed costs, and more than enough cash to grow aggressively or weather any type of correction in the real estate market. I do not feel like a correction will come, and I see the potential for over 50% upside in the near term for UCP.

Company Background

UCP was formed in 2004 and was acquired by PICO Holdings (PICO) in 2008. The story for UCP really begins with its acquisition by PICO, and access to capital that the acquisition provided. Since 2008, UCP has acquired over 6,000 single-family residential lots while investing over $200M. The vast majority of the land acquired and owned today is in Northern California, with a smaller concentration of land holdings in the Puget Sound area of Washington state.

In 2010, UCP launched its homebuilding operation, Benchmark Communities. Today, the company owns and controls over 5,000 lots across 48 communities. There is a significant amount of importance to that last point. On average, each community owned or controlled by the company is comprised of just over 100 lots (~5,000 lots / 48 communities). This is critically important as the company owns communities that can be quickly monetized as opposed to those with hundreds of lots, and have a short tail to them which reduces the holding risk for those who are concerned about a real estate correction.

UCP sold ~7.8M shares as part of the IPO, which priced at $15 per share, raising ~$117M prior to offering costs or any additional proceeds from the underwriters option to purchase up to slightly over another 1M shares. The amount of shares sold as part of the IPO equaled the equivalent of 42.3% of the outstanding ownership interest in the company. Without consideration for the underwriter option to purchase additional shares, this should leave a total of ~18.3M shares outstanding at this point (7.75M shares issued / 42.3% ownership interest). With a current share price of ~$14 per share, the total market capitalization for UCP is ~$255M.

The Investment Opportunity

There are two parts to the investment opportunity. The first is there has been zero coverage yet on this company. All the market knows is that another real estate company hit the public markets, and the coverage has been negative in the sense that it priced at the lower end of its IPO. This compares to other homebuilder IPOs earlier in the year that spiked right out of the gate. Again, I think this is partially timing related due to the interest rate spike and also due to the market not realizing that this company has the upside opportunity of a homebuilder without all of the legacy issues that others in this sector still carry. I fully suspect that when coverage is initiated on UCP it will be at a price point significantly higher than where the stock trades today, which leads directly into the second investment opportunity. This company owns a significant amount of land in relation to its market capitalization. It owns essentially zero legacy land positions, or those purchased before the housing crash that are still not yet fairly valued in many instances. The image below from the IPO prospectus shows the vintage year that the ~5,000 lots owned/controlled currently was acquired:

You clearly see that over 80% of the current land holdings were acquired between 2008 and 2011, when the housing and land market was at its most depressed state. Investors have argued that land sitting on homebuilders' book is undervalued because GAAP accounting rules do not allow for land to be marked up to its fair value. In most cases, I disagree with this argument. In the case of UCP, because the company has to bare all as part of its prospectus and we can determine when its land was purchased, I fully believe that the land held on the balance sheet today is carried at a cost significantly below fair market value.

The table below from the prospectus filing shows the total lots owned and controlled by market:

Again, there are multiple key takeaways from this table. First, we see that the company owns over 4,200 lots out of a total of ~5,000 lots owned/controlled. Owning over 80% of the lots the company controls means the company has physically already purchased the bulk of its lots, and will not be burdened with that cash outlay in the future. The company reported that its total value ascribed to real estate inventory (the bulk of which is land assets) was ~$140M at the end of the last quarter. If you exclude the controlled lots, which the company has very little investment in other than a deposit, you can see just how cheap the land is that the company owns. Using rough math, with $140M of real estate inventory divided by 4,255 owned lots (as seen above), the average value of a lot owned by the company is ~$33K. Just how undervalued these lots are becomes apparent when you view the following table from the KB Home (KBH) 2012 10-K:

KB Home owned ~3,900 lots classified as land held for future development in its West Coast market, which is California. The carrying value of this land was ~$337M, which equates to over $85K per lot. This is land that KB Home does not intend to monetize within 12 months, in some cases because the land has just been acquired and needs to be developed. However, in most cases, this land is part of developments where the housing market has still not recovered to the point where it is economically feasible for the company to generate a return on these assets.

UCP owns lots in California with an average basis of $33K, and roughly 25% of those lots are already finished. In reality, as the finished lots carry a higher basis, the remaining 75% of owned lots are valued at even less than $33K on average. KB Home has lots in California valued at $85K that it cannot monetize today. Even if you think KB Home is overvalued, the discrepancy between the carrying cost for UCP land inventory shows just how undervalued the land holdings for UCP are.

Further evidence of how undervalued the land holdings are can also be found in the prospectus. Since 2008, UCP has sold ~950 lots and homes for just over $100M in proceeds. This works out to over $100K on average for each lot/home sold. The bulk of the transactions, ~850, were lot sales without a home. During Q1 2013, the company sold 54 lots at an ASP of ~$140K generating a gross margin on each lot of ~39%.

The Best Of Both Worlds

With the focus of not only growing a homebuilding operation, but also having the ability to generate revenue and profits through developing and selling lots, UCP is uniquely positioned in the real estate sector. The table below shows the operating results for Q1 2013 as shown in the prospectus:

You will note that the company only had 5 communities at which it was operating its homebuilding operation at the end of Q1 2013. The following table shows just how explosive the homebuilding growth will be in the coming quarters:

The above table shows that the company has over 1,000 lots, across 15 communities, which are or will be substantially developed and ready to open for sales by the end of 2013. The company ended the last quarter with 5 selling efforts, and that number is set to increase by over 200% in the near term. Here is where you will see explosive growth, albeit from a low level, in home closings and revenue over the next few quarters. With a homebuilding company, the operating leverage significantly increases in a situation like this where the entire portfolio of communities is closely concentrated in one geographic area.

The above table only shows 15 communities out of the 48 communities the company owns. UCP can selectively choose to either monetize its remaining communities by developing them and opening homebuilding operations or by selling them to other homebuilders. This is a luxury other builders do not have, in so much as they need to chase volume in order to support their cost structure.

Finally, UCP is unique in that after accounting for its ~$110M IPO proceeds net of costs and its cash on hand, it will have close to $120M at its disposal earmarked for growth. This compares to total debt of only ~$40M. The total market capitalization of the company is currently ~$255M. The net cash (cash minus debt) for UCP will be equal to ~31% of its total market capitalization. The book value for the company will be ~$225M after adding the IPO proceeds to the existing equity of ~$110M. This will give UCP a price-to-book value ratio of ~1.1x. This valuation, combined with the headline of substantial growth in the quarters to come, is what will drive the stock higher.

Investment Outlook

This is about as straight forward of an opportunity that you will find in the homebuilding and real estate industry today. The lack of coverage and fear regarding rising interest rates is creating an opportunity that will not last for long. In homebuilding, most valuation analysis centers around price-to-book value:

TMHC Price / Book Value Chart

TMHC Price / Book Value data by YCharts

The above chart shows some of the more fairly valued homebuilders, as well as Taylor Morrison (TMHC), who just went public earlier this year. You will see that the lowest price to book valuation is 1.8x for M.D.C Holdings (MDC). Another California-based homebuilder which had its IPO earlier this year, TRI Pointe Homes (TPH), trades for greater than a 1.6x price-to-book value ratio.

The upside case here is simple. At a current valuation of ~1.1x its book value, UCP has more upside than any other publicly traded homebuilder. Further, the company has a cleaner balance sheet than any other builder and will face far less downside in the risk of a correction. With a small operation, entailing minimal overhead and carrying costs, UCP does not face the risk of getting caught with overvalued land assets. Remember, over 80% of the land assets the company owns today were purchased between 2008 and 2011. Compare that to the other homebuilders today buying land left and right, at a time when land prices have soared as the housing market has recovered. As the market realizes the opportunity, and the significant risk/reward profile of this company, I feel that UCP has at a minimum 50% upside before its price-to-book valuation is even at a remotely reasonable level. If the company executes on its expansion plans and grows its community account swiftly, the upside could be over 75% before UPC reaches a valuation of 2x its book value.

Opportunity is knocking, answer the door.

Seven bright spots to end a crowded, messy summer at the movies

By Steve Pond

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - If you've been an avid moviegoer this summer, we understand that you might be worn out by now.

Maybe you've got superhero fatigue or apocalypse overload, or maybe you're just fed up to the gills with gunshots and fights and things blowing up and tough guys overcoming impossible odds.

And maybe, as July comes to an end, you're ready to stay away from the multiplexes for a while, to spend August catching up on "Breaking Bad" or "House of Cards" or rooting on the Dodgers.

But hang on a second. The summer movie landscape may seem as blighted and unappealing as the ravaged planet in "After Earth" or the zombiescape of "World War Z" - but with a month to go, there are actually a few movies that might be worth leaving the house to see.

Besides, the volume of releases slacks off in August, meaning that some of these flicks could have a little more room to breathe than their May, June and July counterparts, which were shoved out in a brutally overstuffed release schedule that meant anything that didn't come out of the box with a bang was DOA.

Note: We've only seen two of these movies, "The Spectacular Now" and "Short Term 12," so don't blame us if they're not as good as we think they might be. But this is summertime, and hope springs eternal.

"The Spectacular Now" (August 2)

Remember when heartfelt coming-of-age movies were part of the major-studio mainstream release schedule? For today's moviegoers, "The Breakfast Club" and "Say Anything" and their ilk are ancient history, and films like "The Spectacular Now" are almost entirely the province of indie companies.

But the indie arena suits this film, which consistently understates rather than overplays and features dead-on performances by Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley that make them seem like real teenagers, not movie characters. Director James Ponsoldt, coming off the excellent but more harrowing "Smashed," became a Hollywood hot property on the heels of this film's Sundance debut: He's now signed up to direct a Hillary Rodham Clinton biopic and is working on a few things for the Weinstein Co., including an adaptation of the musical "Pippin."

"Elysium" (August 9)

This is the big one. In 2009, Neill Blomkamp put a fresh spin on the sci-fi flick with "District 9," which came out of nowhere to capture a Best Picture nomination. His follow-up is also set in the future, with bigger names in the cast (Matt Damon, Jodie Foster) and a plotline (guy with cancer tries to fight his way to the one-percenters' haven in the sky where they can cure it) that should allow Blomkamp to once again slide social commentary into the action genre.

Will this be the rare movie that brings a brain to a too-often-mindless arena? Hopes are high enough that "Elysium" tops our must-see list.

"Lee Daniels' The Butler" (August16)

You've followed the controversy, now see the movie. The Weinstein Co. and Warner Bros. waged a pitched battle over the title "The Butler," with TWC losing the war but gaining a compromise that at least allowed them to use the word butler for this story in which the always-reliable Forest Whitaker stars as a real-life White House butler in eight 20th century administrations.

Daniels is hardly the sure thing he might have seemed after his Oscar winner "Precious" - his last film, "The Paperboy," was an absurdly overheated Southern Gothic potboiler that needed to be a little worse to enter so-bad-it's-good territory. But he figures to show more restraint this time around, and you know that Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey and Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. and their castmates will all be acting up a storm.

"Kick-Ass 2" (August 16)

This is the movie that was too violent for Jim Carrey, and you can decide whether that's a recommendation or not. A sequel to the 2010 action comedy that brings back stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Grace Moretz, it features Carrey as a superhero leader called Colonel Stars and Stripes - but after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Carrey tweeted that he wouldn't do publicity for the film because "in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence."

If the original "Kick-Ass" is any indication, the film's violence will be excessive but also cartoonish and tongue-in-cheek. Like the original, "K-A2" is based on comic books by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr., which should guarantee that it will be as zestfully tasteless and gloriously offensive as its predecessor.

"The World's End" (August 23)

Edgar Wright made three movies before this one, and the first two - "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" - were delightfully twisted comedies starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. So it's good news that "The World's End" stars Pegg and Frost as heavy drinkers whose attempt to complete a legendary pub crawl encounters some unexpected obstacles of alien origin.

The film won mostly rave reviews after its July release in the U.K. - and in a summer long on end-of-the-world extravaganzas, this might be the right one to put the cherry on top of the impending apocalypse.

"The Grandmaster" (August 23)

You want action? You want fights? You want kick-ass summer multiplex mayhem? Then you might want to get it not from some Hollywood VFX factory, but from Hong Kong's Wong Kar-wai, a director whose cinematic legacy is so unassailable that he is the only Chinese filmmaker to head the Cannes jury, and was the subject of a Matthew Weiner-hosted tribute on Monday night at the Motion Picture Academy.

"The Grandmaster" is a drama based on the life of Ip Man, a master of the Wing Chun style of martial arts. By all reports it mixes extraordinary action footage (and not a CG monster in sight!) with quieter and more philosophical sequences that have prompted occasional comparisons to the landmark "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

"Short Term 12" (August 23)

One of the quietest but most touching films on the list, Destin Daniel Cretton's low-key drama won the jury and audience awards at this year's SXSW. It features a remarkable performance from Brie Larson as the supervisor at a foster-care home for at-risk teens, and has an array of fine teen actors playing the kids.

"Short Term 12" is a quiet gem that never gets mawkish but isn't afraid to be sentimental. Cretton, who adapted his short film based on his own experiences as a counselor, has made a touching, open-hearted movie that faces the darkness but also looks to the light, and one that insists that family can be forged in the toughest of circumstances.

Facebook soars after 2Q results beat estimates

(AP) ? Facebook's stock is flying high after the world's biggest social network posted higher revenue from mobile ads and delivered a healthy second-quarter profit that reversed a loss a year earlier.

The results, which come in the heels of weaker-than-expected results from online search leader Google Inc., signal that Facebook's aggressive push into the mobile advertising market continues to pay off. The company began showing mobile advertisements for the first time last spring. On Wednesday, Facebook said mobile ads accounted for 41 percent of its total advertising revenue.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company's stock jumped $4.93, or 18.6 percent, to $31.44 in extended trading after closing at $26.51. The stock priced at $38 when Facebook went public in May 2012 and hasn't hit that since.

"I'm completely surprised," said Gartner analyst Brian Blau, summing up the sentiments of many investors who've watched Facebook's stock price stagnate over the past year due in large part to concerns about its mobile prospects.

"I was actually thinking that maybe they would have a soft quarter," he added, citing a softening of advertising revenue ? Facebook's bread and butter ? across the industry. "That seems not to be the case."

Facebook Inc. it earned $333 million, or 13 cents per share, in the April-June period. That's up from a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share, a year ago. Adjusted earnings were $488 million, or 19 cents per share, above the 14 cents that analysts were expecting.

Facebook's revenue grew 53 percent to $1.81 billion from $1.18 billion, well above the $1.62 million that analysts polled by FactSet were expecting. Facebook has also quickened the pace of its revenue growth. In the first quarter, revenue grew 38 percent and in the fourth quarter of last year, 40 percent.

Mobile revenue was $655.6 million, or 41 percent of the quarter's total advertising revenue of $1.6 billion.

"We've made good progress growing our community, deepening engagement and delivering strong financial results, especially on mobile," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a statement. "The work we've done to make mobile the best Facebook experience is showing good results and provides us with a solid foundation for the future."

Research firm eMarketer expects Facebook to increase its mobile advertising revenue more than fourfold to over $2 billion this year. This would give the company a 13 percent share of the global mobile ad market, up from about 5 percent last year.

That said, Google is a distant No. 1 when it comes to mobile ads. EMarketer estimates that the company held a 52 percent share of the global $8.8 billion mobile ad market last year. This year, the firm expects Google's share to grow to 56 percent.

In a conference call with analysts, Zuckerberg sought to ease concerns that teenagers are growing tired of Facebook and flocking to newer, hipper services such as (Facebook-owned) Instagram.

"Based on our data, that isn't true," he said. "It's difficult to measure this perfectly since some young people lie about their age, but based on the best data we have, we believe we have close to fully penetrated in the U.S. teen demographic for a while, and the number of teens using Facebook on a daily and monthly basis has been steady over the past year and a half."

Facebook has also been working on growing its international advertising revenue, since most of its users live outside of the United States. The company announced this week that more than 100 million people access Facebook using traditional, non-smart phones in countries like India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Facebook had 1.15 billion monthly active users as of June 30, up 21 percent from a year ago. The number of monthly mobile users grew 51 percent to 819 million.

Hooked! Male Fish Lure Females With Genital Claws

When male guppies fail to win over females with their good looks and dance moves, they turn to another, more aggressive set of tools: claws on the tips of their genitalia.

Biologists have long speculated that guppies ? freshwater fish native to the Caribbean ? use tiny claws on the tips of their genitalia to secure mates. But, until now, nobody has tested this theory experimentally. A group of biologists from the University of Toronto conducted an experiment to test the role of the claws in mating, and found that the grippers helped males seal the deal with females that were otherwise unwilling to mate, the researchers report today (July 23) in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

At first, male guppies take on a peaceful approach to mating and put on a bit of a show to attract females. When they are lucky, the females willingly approach them when the show is over. [Top 10 Swingers in the Animal Kingdom]

"The male will display to the female, extending his body in an S shape and then shimmering, showing these bright spots," said Lucia Kwan, a graduate student at the University of Toronto and a co-author of the report. "If the female is receptive, she glides over to the male."

But, if females don't show interest, males continue to pursue them. They sneak around the female from behind or below, and try to force sperm into her without her cooperation. This behavior is common in guppies in the wild, Kwan said.

To test the role of claws in this mating tactic, the team used a scalpel to slice off the claws from a subset of test guppies, leaving the claws intact in the rest of the test group for comparison. They then placed each male in a tank with a virgin female and waited up to two hours to observe mating behavior. At the end of each trial, the team extracted the females from the tanks and dissected them, removing and quantifying the amount of sperm within each female.

The team found that clawed males transferred up to three times more sperm to females than declawed males did during forced matings. However, in cases in which females actively approached the males, both clawed and declawed males had comparable success. This finding suggests the claws may help the males tighten their grip on squirming, uncooperative females, but are otherwise not necessary for sperm transfer.

Other fish related to the guppy have similar gripping tools on the tips of their genitalia, including hooks and spines. The team hopes to explore the roles of these other structures ? some of which appear only in certain individuals within a species ? to better understand their evolutionary advantages in sexual selection. ?

"We see these patterns, but we are still unaware of which [evolutionary] mechanisms are driving them," Kwan told LiveScience. ?

The team hopes this work will help explain why fish genitalia vary so greatly across species.

South Africa, Riots and the Price of Food

On 16 August 2012, 34 workers at the Marikana platinum mine in South Africa were killed during violent protests over pay. The incident was the single most lethal use of force by the South African security forces against civilians since 1960.

The background to the protests was the widespread view that the high profits generated by platinum mining were in stark contrast to the low wages of the workers. The miners had downed tools in protest and demanded a fair wage.

Today, Yaneer Bar-Yam and pals at the New England Complex Systems Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, say that another factor plays an important and underrated role in the civil unrest in South Africa.

Bar-Yam?s theory is that global food prices and the likelihood of riots are closely correlated. The bottom line is that when people cannot afford to feed their families, their only way of bringing about change is civil disobedience.

With that in mind, Bar-Yam and colleagues show that worker wages in South Africa have not kept up with the drastic increases in recent years in the price of food. The price of food in South Africa has more than doubled since 2006.

In particular, the New England team show that the 2012 riots coincided with a sharp spike in the price of maize caused in large part by drought in the US. They also show that a similar hike in prices occurred at the same time as other riots in South Africa in 2008.

Readers of this blog will have come across this idea before. Bar-Yam has been tracking the link between food prices and riots for some time, showing for example that the civil unrest in North Africa in 2010, which became known as the Arab Spring, was closely correlated with rising food prices.

Bar-Yam says that it is not food prices themselves that cause riots. The effects are more subtle. Instead, when prices rise above some threshold, this creates the conditions in which riots are more likely to occur, like tinder in a dry forest.

It also leads to the obvious prediction that riots are likely in the near future, particularly in countries that are heavily dependent on maize, if food prices continue to rise. Places at risk include Haiti and Argentina, both of which have experienced food-related protests in recent months.

So what to do? The New England team point to two factors that particularly contribute to rising food prices. The first is the US policy of converting maize to ethanol which removes an important foodstuff from the food supply and pushes up prices. The second is speculation on commodity futures markets that pushes up food prices causing bubbles and crashes.

Bar-Yam and co say that changes in regulation could help reduce the impact of both of these factors, something the US is uniquely positioned to do. In addition, it ought to be possible to mitigate the impact of high and volatile food prices in other ways, such as subsidising certain foodstuffs.

Without this kind of action, the consequences are likely to be dire. Bar-Yam and co are surely understating matters when they conclude that: ?Without attention to the global food price situation, more incidents of food-based social instability are likely to arise.?

The Morning Ledger: Ford and Facebook Lead Earnings Parade

The Morning Ledger from CFO Journal cues up the most important news in corporate finance every weekday morning.?Send us tips, suggestions and complaints: david.hall@wsj.com. Get The Morning Ledger emailed to you each weekday morning by clicking here. Follow us on Twitter @CFOJournal.

THE DAY AHEAD:

We?ve got some key earnings coming out today. Ford is expected to post a healthy profit increase driven by strength in the U.S. market. Sales in the U.S., Ford?s major profit center, were up 13% year-to-date through June. Even Europe, a financial black hole for it and most competitors at the moment, looks better. Ford?s unit sales there last month were 6.4% higher, even as the entire market fell 6.5%, Ahead of the Tape?s Spencer Jakab notes.

Facebook reports its Q2 results after markets close, and the big question will be how well it?s growing its mobile revenue, says CNBC?s Julia Boorstin. On the earnings call, we should hear questions about how well Facebook?s new ad formats are working, and how users are responding to new products like Graph Search and Instagram video, Boorstin says.

Other earnings of note: Boeing, PepsiCo, Caterpillar, Delta Air, U.S. Airways, Nasdaq and Visa.

Dell shareholders are set to vote today on CEO Michael Dell?s $24.4 billion buyout offer for the company, after a previous meeting was pushed back a week in the hope of persuading dubious investors to accept the deal, Reuters notes. Mr. Dell and Silver Lake have been lobbying hard, but there is a possibility that the vote could be postponed again

And President Obama hits the road to try to drum up support for his economic policies ahead of looming battles over government funding and the debt ceiling. Mr. Obama will deliver the first in a series of economic speeches today at Knox College in Illinois, the Hill notes. House Speaker John Boehner has already dismissed Mr. Obama?s planned speeches as a push for higher taxes.

Markets flash: Weak manufacturing data from China weighed on Asian markets. European shares are up and DJIA futures are also higher.

EXCLUSIVE ON CFOJ:

Strong dollar eats into DuPont profits. DuPont?s earnings this year?could take a hit of 12 cents to 14 cents from the strong U.S. dollar, more than double the company?s previous estimate, Vipal Monga reports. While DuPont is sticking to its $3.85-a-share earnings guidance, the declining values of the Japanese yen and Brazilian real are eating into profits for many multinational companies. McDonald?s, United Technologies and Lexmark International are all suffering from adverse exchange rates. ?The dollar has strengthened considerably during the year,? said Nick Fanandakis, DuPont?s chief financial officer. The yen and the real have lost, respectively, 15% and 8% of their value against the dollar since January. In the second quarter, currency effects shaved three cents a share from DuPont?s earnings. The company reported a profit of $1.03 billion, or $1.11 a share, down 12% from a year earlier.

CORPORATE NEWS:

Strong iPhone sales fail to reverse Apple?s profit slide. Apple reported stronger iPhone sales in its fiscal third quarter, but it?s running into trouble persuading consumers to buy its other gadgets, writes the WSJ?s Ian Sherr. And consumers in emerging markets are gravitating to models of the company?s less-expensive iPhone 4 line?which was introduced in 2010?rather than the flagship iPhone 5 announced last fall. Sales of the iPads dropped 14% from a year earlier and demand for Macs fell 7%, contributing to a second consecutive quarter of declines for Apple?s overall revenue and profit. CFO Peter Oppenheimer told Reuters that iPhone sales rose 51% in the U.S. and 66% in Japan. But revenue from greater China dived 43% from the second quarter and 14% from the year-earlier period. CEO Tim Cook told analysts to expect new products in coming months, with some ?in new categories,? but he played his cards close to the vest. ?We are on track to have a very busy fall,? Mr. Oppenheimer said, without going into details.

RadioShack CFO bolts. RadioShack lost its CFO as the company reported a deeper quarterly loss and warned it would continue to liquidate inventory through the end of the year, the WSJ?s Drew Fitzgerald reports. CFO Dorvin Lively left the company to take the same job at Planet Fitness?forfeiting a $1.5 million retention bonus he could have earned by staying on through Oct. 1. He will be succeeded for now by Holly Etlin, a managing director at consulting firm AlixPartners, who will steer the company through a major debt payment coming due next week as well as the ramp-up to the end-of-year holidays. Mr. Lively, the former CFO, served as RadioShack?s chief executive last winter while the company searched for a successor to James Gooch. Joseph Magnacca took the CEO job in February. Janney Capital Markets analyst David Strasser told Reuters that he wasn?t surprised by Mr. Lively?s departure, given that he had been passed over for the CEO job when Mr. Magnacca was hired. ?The timing, however, is less than ideal, as they are making big balance-sheet decisions imminently,?Mr. ?Strasser said.

Texas Instruments CFO: Customers less cautious. Texas Instruments CFO Kevin March thinks that customers are becoming a bit less cautious. TI noted an improving economic climate when it reported its Q2 results earlier this week. ?We saw a slight shift occurring, with customers giving us more visibility,? Mr. March told TheStreet.com. ?We see that as marginally encouraging in that it suggests some increased confidence on the part of our customers.? Mr. March is also optimistic about the broader economy. ?There?s more recognition that the U.S. economy has a number of things going for it,? he said, pointing to the housing and automotive markets. ??We would all like the economy to be growing faster, but if we just step back and look at it?it?s not great, but it?s doing OK,? he added.

Cisco snaps up Sourcefire for $2.7 billion. Cisco Systems agreed to buy cybersecurity firm Sourcefire for $2.7 billion. The purchase price, which includes retention incentives, is the latest indication of the private sector?s growing emphasis on cybersecurity as more companies become comfortable discussing hacker threats and hackers get more sophisticated, the WSJ?s Danny Yadron and Saabira Chaudhuri say. Intel bought McAfee in 2010, and EMC picked up RSA Security in 2006. ?It does seem expensive,? said Adam Hils, an analyst at Gartner. ?But the halo effect they get from this demonstrates their commitment to security, and it gives them some chops.?

Of particular worry, the survey showed employment fell at its steepest rate since March 2009. So far, China?s slowdown hasn?t been accompanied by signs of major job cuts.
