This Robot Can Draw Your Blood

This Robot Can Draw Your Blood

Some people are champs about having blood drawn and even go back as often as they're allowed to donate blood. If you're one of those people that's frickin great. Go pat yourself on the back. If not you are probably thinking that you don't want a robot coming anywhere near you with a needle. But the robot might actually be the better bet.

Citizen plans crowdfunded takeover of Canadian carrier, raises a couple hundred

You'd think a carrier takeover funded by the proletariat would have to be hostile, right? Heck, no. Canadian Valya Michael loves Mobilicity, all the way from its headquarters down to its little cell towers, and he fears a serious loss of commercial competition if the embattled company should fail. So he's started a $400,000,000 campaign (in the northern currency, that is) to buy it out, clear its debts and invest in better coverage and customer service. We have no idea what Indiegogo, Mobilicity or the telecoms regulator will do if the funding target is achieved, but they all have plenty of time to draft a response seeing as the current total stands at $213. Meanwhile, the fate of that other big Indiegogo project seems almost as uncertain.

Karl Rove Focuses on Senate GOP Takeover in Fundraising Email

Can the Republican Party pick up six Senate seats in the 2014 election and in the process retake the majority in the U.S. Senate? Republican strategist Karl Rove thinks so.

Rove, a Fox News contributor, is using the possibility of a Senate takeover as a fundraising tool in his latest appeal to GOP donors.

A former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush, Rove sent an email to donors on Sunday citing favorable polls and remarks from former New York Times number cruncher Nate Silver as leading indicators that the GOP has a chance to take back the Senate in 2014, so long as the monetary support is there.

Latest: Do You Support Giving Illegals Citizenship? Vote Here Now

"Washington is buzzing with the news! Even liberal prognosticators now admit Republicans can pick up six seats to take the U.S. Senate in 2014," Rove's email reads.

In his email suggesting a Republican majority in the Senate is possible, Rove noted that six of the seven Democratic Senate seats up for reelection are in states that were won by Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney in the 2012 race by a margin of 10 percent or greater.

Rove also highlighted the recent announcement by former Montana Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer that he will not run for the state's open Senate seat in 2014.

"The GOP can win a Senate majority, but it won't be easy. Your support is vital to ensuring Republicans have the resources necessary for victory," Rove's email reads. "Early fundraising is key. Harry Reid knows that: that?s why he announced he?ll try raising $125 million to beat Republicans."

In his attempt to convince GOP donors to make a contribution to the Republican initiative some 16 months before elections are held, Rove also cites "Obama campaign?s favorite number cruncher, Nate Silver."

Editor's Note: Should ObamaCare Be Repealed? Vote in Urgent National Poll

In a New York Times "FiveThirtyEight" blog, Silver wrote: "Best guess, after assigning probabilities of the likelihood of a GOP pickup in each state, is that Republicans will end up with somewhere between 50 and 51 Senate seats after 2014, putting them right on the threshold of a majority."

"Not only is Republican candidate recruitment going well and Democratic recruitment badly, but issues are helping," wrote Rove, "with Obamacare, the sluggish job picture, scandals and an incompetent and out-of-touch White House shaping the political landscape."

If Republicans are able to win back the Senate, it will be the first time since losing the majority in 2006.

National Paralympic Day to be held on September 7 to celebrate London 2012, announces Mayor

By Duncan Mackay

London 2012 Paralympics Opening CeremonyJuly 28 - The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will host a special Paralympic Day on September 7 to mark the first anniversary of London 2012, it has been announced.

The free event, launched today by London Mayor Boris Johnson, will feature top Paralympic athletes and disabled performers.?

National Paralympic Day will be aimed at disabled and non-disabled people and will be the thrilling grand finale to a summer of celebrations marking the one year anniversary of London 2012, Johnson claimed.

Organised by the Mayor of London, The London Legacy Development Corporation and the British Paralympic Association (BPA), the day will be held alongside the Mayor's Liberty Festival, an annual showcase of Deaf and disabled artists. .

Amongst the highlights will be "The Limbless Knight", a aerial and sway performance from award winning theatre company Graeae, which has been co-commissioned by the Legacy Company and Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF), the arts organisation that produces Liberty.

Graeae's artistic director Jenny Sealey was joint artistic director of last year's Paralympic Opening Ceremony, along with Bradley Hemmings, artistic director of GDIF.

There will be a special appearance from Andrea Begley, who recently triumphed on the BBC Television series "The Voice", plus street theatre, outdoor dance, mass choreography, visual arts, live music, film and food.

Another attraction will be "Miracoco Luminarium", a monumental interactive light sculpture.

There will also be a series of have a go sports activities in the north of the Park and inside the Copper Box Arena.

"This event will be a fitting finale to another outstanding summer of sport, culture and entertainment in this magnificent new park. London's Paralympic Games were astonishingly successful, with superb medal-winning performances by our brilliant athletes," said Johnson.

"But they also transformed the way we think about disability.

"This will be a fantastic opportunity to see some of those world-beating athletes in action once again and to enjoy magical performances by some of the finest disabled artists in the UK.

"It's also another chance to enjoy our fabulous new Park."

National Paralympic Day is the latest initiative launched to ensure that there is a legacy from London 2012.?

"The performances of the ParalympicsGB athletes inspired the nation and changed the way people think about disability," said Tim Hollingsworth, chief executive of the BPA.

"National Paralympic Day will recreate some of the wonder of the Paralympic Games and will build on the momentum that was started so successfully last year."

Rory MacDonald wins UFC on Fox 8 snooze fest over Jake Ellenberger

The co-main event at UFC on Fox 8 was supposed to be a chance for the next welterweight contender to make a statement. The bout between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger figured to be an exciting bout between the two most likely men to fight for the welterweight belt after champion Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks fight. Instead, MacDonald won a decision in a snooze fest.

MacDonald established a jab early in the fight, and continued to use it throughout the bout. He didn't come up with big moves that could finish the fight, though. Instead, he was content to rely on the jab again and again.

Ellenberger played the fight even more cautiously than MacDonald. He couldn't find a way to avoid MacDonald's jab and set up a strike or a takedown. The Division II wrestling All-American couldn't get a takedown until late in the third round. This fight was his big opportunity to get to the championship shot, but his cautiousness kept him from getting the win.

The crowd was unrelenting in their boos, and even UFC president Dana White was disappointed.

"I obviously look to finish fights, but he?s a good fighter, so what can you do? I think I had him worried with the elbows because he didn?t want to come near me after that. That wasn?t my game plan, but I accomplished what I needed to do," MacDonald said after the fight.

Though MacDonald got the win, there is no guarantee he will get a title shot any time soon after that performance. He trains with St-Pierre, and appeared to learn from his safe, but not exciting, approach. At 15-1, he has the resume for a title shot. But will the UFC want to feature him if this is the fight fans remember?
