How to Reopen a DOS Window

The Microsoft Disk Operating System, also called MS-DOS or Command Prompt, allows you to manipulate Windows settings and files using textual commands rather than the graphical menus of Windows 7. When using the Command Prompt in your business, you may inadvertently close the window or intentionally close it to reopen it in a different mode. For example, you might realize that formatting a thumb drive requires administrative privileges, or you want to avoid typing a long path name to a business file. Whatever the reason, Windows 7 gives you several methods and options to reopen the Command Prompt.

Step 1

Click "Start | All Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt" to reopen MS-DOS with normal privileges. Alternatively, click "Start," type "cmd" and press "Enter." You can also press "Win-R," type "cmd" and press "Enter."

Step 2

Click the "Start" button, type "cmd," right-click on "cmd.exe" and click "Run as Administrator" to run Command Prompt with elevated privileges. You can also select this option after navigating to the "Command Prompt" shortcut in the Start menu, as described in the previous step.

Step 3

Press "Win-E" to open Windows Explorer. Hold the "Shift" key and right-click on a folder. Click "Open Command Window Here" to open the Command Prompt in the selected directory. This option saves you the trouble and potential errors you may encounter typing a long, complex path name.
