(AP) ? President Barack Obama argued Friday that allowing taxes to rise for the middle class would amount to a "lump of coal" for Christmas, while Republican House Speaker John Boehner declared that negotiations to surmount a looming fiscal cliff are going "almost nowhere."

Obama took his case to an audience in a Philadelphia suburb, saying that this move would present a "Scrooge Christmas" for millions of wage-earners. Speaking at a toy factory, the president said Republicans should extend existing Bush-era tax rates for households earning $250,000 or less, while allowing increases to kick in for the wealthy.

On Capitol Hill, Boehner argued that Obama's latest offer ? to raise revenue by $1.6 trillion over the next decade ? would be a "crippling blow" to an economy that is still struggling to find its footing. The Ohio Republican told reporters he would continue working with Obama to avoid hundreds of billions in tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect beginning in January if Washington doesn't act to stop it, but gave a gloomy assessment of the talks so far.

"There's a stalemate. Let's not kid ourselves," Boehner said. "Right now, we're almost nowhere."

Obama's speech came a day after his administration proposed nearly $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue over 10 years, $600 billion in savings from changes in mandatory spending programs including Medicare, and $200 billion in spending ranging from public works projects to help for the unemployed and struggling homeowners, according to administration officials.

Republicans rejected the offer as unreasonable. Republicans have said they are open to new tax revenue but not higher rates.

Obama said he believed both parties "can and will work together" to reach an agreement to get its long-term deficit under control "in a way that's balanced and is fair."

Obama spoke at the Rodon Group manufacturing facility, showcasing the company as an example of a business that depends on middle-class consumers during the holiday season. The company manufactures parts for K'NEX Brands, a construction toy company whose products include Tinkertoy, K'NEX Building Sets and Angry Birds Building Sets. The road trip was part of a dual White House strategy of having the president's team meet with members of Congress while Obama travels the country to pressure Congress to act.

The president joked that he's keeping his own "naughty and nice list" for members of Congress ? and only some would get a K'NEX set for Christmas.

Administration officials said the White House offer, presented to Hill Republicans by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, constituted much of what Obama has previously suggested in budget proposals and during the campaign.

Under the administration's plan, the new tax revenue would include $950 billion generated by raising taxes on families with incomes over $250,000 and by closing certain tax loopholes. The remainder would be achieved through an overhaul of the tax system next year and would not become effective until 2014.

The proposal, which the administration has also described to business and labor leaders, would require Congress and the White House to identify a "down payment" of cuts and tax loophole closings by the end of this year that would buy Congress and the president time to negotiate a tax overhaul and changes in entitlement programs between now and Aug. 1.

One new feature in the Geithner plan is a call for increasing the nation's debt limit without the need for congressional approval. Under last year's debt ceiling deal, Obama simply had to notify Congress that he was raising the debt ceiling, a move that could be blocked only if both houses of Congress passed resolutions of disapproval that Obama could veto. The administration wants a permanent extension of the debt ceiling with a similar legislative arrangement and with no offsetting spending cuts, as demanded by Republicans.

One administration official said Obama's must-have positions are expirations of the Bush era tax cuts for high earners and the inclusion of the debt limit in the deal. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to describe publicly the state of negotiations.

By counting $1 trillion in spending cuts agreed to last year, claiming $800 billion saved this year and over the next decade because of troop drawdowns in Iraq and Afghanistan and estimating $600 billion in lower interest payments on the national debt, the administration places its total deficit reduction over 10 years nearly $4.4 trillion.

Online Fitness Startup Wello Raises $1 Million From Kleiner Perkins ...

Online fitness marketplace Wello launched earlier this summer to enable users to get private, one-on-one training sessions ? but to do so in the comfort of their own homes. Now the startup has raised a $1 million seed round of financing from investors in healthcare incubator Rock Health, such as Kleiner Perkins, Mohr Davidow, Aberdare Ventures, and Mayo Ventures. Others include Morado Ventures, S-Cubed Capital, PhilQuo Ventures, and other angels.

Wello provides a marketplace to connect trainers with clients, but does so with live video sessions over the Internet. The idea is to help people who don?t have time to go to the gym or don?t want to do so to get personalized training through live video sessions. That?s right ? no travel, no embarrassing workouts in front of the actual fit people at the gym. Just you, in your home, receiving personalized instruction by video.

Customers can choose from a variety of different training regimens, from yoga and Pilates to kickboxing and strength training. The startup has more than 150 different trainers and fitness professionals signed up to provide sessions from all across the U.S. All trainers are vetted to check out their certifications and references, and are run through trial sessions to see how well they do in a streaming video environment. When they do connect with a client, they can provide a more personalized workout than someone would get from a typical class environment.

So far, the model seems to be working with early users: More than two-third of those who try a workout come back for another, and repeat users have racked up an average of 5.5 sessions a month. Trainers, meanwhile, benefit by being able to set their own hours and getting paid a much larger fraction than they would make at the local gym. Users can choose between 25-, 40-, and 55-minute sessions, and Wello co-founder Leslie Silverglide says group sessions will be coming soon.

Silverglide told me the funding will be used to add a few engineers and new members to the marketing team to help scale and get the word out. The company has TK employees and is based in San Francisco.

Wello is a website that brings trainers and clients together for fun, personalized and convenient training sessions over live, two-way video. For clients, Wello enables them to workout anywhere they have their laptop and enjoy a personal trainer experience without being tied to the gym. For trainers, Wello increases revenue opportunities by filling open times of their day.

Saving Money with Ex-Government Vehicles

19 mins ago, in Lifestyle

Mercedes-Benz 600 S Pullman (Built:1966)When looking to buy a new car, there are many options that are available to you. Buying privately or from a used car dealership can offer you a wide selection, but often, you can get a much better deal if you look in the right alternative place. Buying from the government and getting ex-fleet vehicles is a great option for getting a new car that will not cost you a lot for the quality that you get. This article considers why getting an ex-government vehicle is a good option for you.

The Benefits of a Government Vehicle

There are several benefits to buying an ex-government vehicle, and whist the mileage may be high, you will be able to recognise a good deal in the offerings. Here are two simple reasons why an ex-government vehicle may be perfect for you:

  1. Low attrition ?Government cars are official vehicles and are thus treated with respect. Buying a government vehicle means that you will know you are buying a car that has been driven responsibly and treated with respect. The interior, exterior and engine will always be very highly maintained on a government vehicle, because the image and reliability are far more important than the cost that is involved with the maintenance.
  1. Service history ?Government vehicles will also have an excellent service history that can tell you a lot about the vehicle. For policy and safety reasons, those looking after the government cars keep detailed records about the elements of the car that have been changed. This record of auto repairs and services will greatly benefit you in getting a good deal, because you?ll be able to recognise exactly how long the vehicle is likely to last without its elements being replaced.

Buying an Ex-Government Vehicle

It is obviously not that easy to get your hands on an ex-government vehicle if you do not know where to look. In the right place, however, you will have a choice of numerous cars that will have all of the benefits of an ex-government vehicle. At a government auction, you will be able to get the best out of your investment if you know what to look for. Here are a couple of things to consider:

  • Accident history ?Whilst government vehicles will be well maintained, it is very important to consider the accident history when you buy any second-hand vehicle. Checking the accident history will alert you if there has been some serious accidents, and it can also help you to determine if you are getting a good deal for your bid price.
  • Setting a value ?At any auction, it is vitally important that you set yourself targets to buy a vehicle of a certain standard for a certain price. You can make wonderful savings at an auction if you choose the right times to bid and to hold back. Buying at a government vehicle auction can offer you great value if you research and invest at the right time.

Quality at Low Cost

Investing in a government vehicle at an auction can offer you quality at low cost. The high mileage of these vehicles is offset by the maintenance history and the care that is taken to preserve the vehicles. For a first car or a reliable second car, a government auction can be the perfect place to shop. Remember to factor in running costs and car insurance when working out your budget.

The Cleverest Business Model in Online Education

Best babble: A comparison of translations by human experts, automated software, and Internet crowds.

Learning a new language is tedious and demands a lot of practice. Luis von Ahn doesn?t want all that effort to be wasted. In fact, it might be a gold mine.

Von Ahn, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, is the co-creator of Duolingo, a free language-?learning site that turns students into an online workforce. His software uses their answers to simple exercises in a translation service that he expects to charge money for.

It?s clever stuff: an education that pays for itself. That achievement is important as education moves toward being given away online (see ?The Most Important Educational Technology in 200 Years?). Teachers and universities are now running into the same problem journalists and movie studios have faced: how will they make any money if the content is free? No matter how cheap it is to pipe information across the Web, producing lessons and coursework is still demanding and expensive.

Duolingo, which launched in June, has raised $18.3 million in venture funding (see ?Startup Has Language Learners Translating the Web?). It offers English lessons for Spanish and Portuguese speakers and lessons in Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese for English speakers. Around 300,000 people now use it each week.

The company is going up against popular language software such as Rosetta Stone (itself a less costly alternative to in-person lessons). But von Ahn thinks he has the edge, and not only because his classes are free.

?Most language-learning software providers have no incentive for you to learn,? he says. ?Once [they] get your $500, they?re happy. We?ll do a lot to get you to come back, because it really matters.? His hoped-for translation business depends on it.

That?s why the company?s 20 employees in Pittsburgh spend most of their time getting the software to teach better. Von Ahn says that so far about 30 percent of people who start learning a language will still be visiting the site a week later. That figure may sound low, but it?s impressive for any Web service, he says. Duolingo users are drilled on new words using both written exercises and audio (the software can detect and assess their pronunciation). As they progress, their performance is used to decide what lessons they get next.

It adds up to a free course several hundred hours long that can take a student from zero knowledge of a second tongue to what von Ahn describes as ?intermediate level? ability?the kind you?d need to get by on a foreign vacation or grasp the gist of a newspaper article.

The other side of the business comes in when students are asked to practice by translating single sentences from one language to another. Those sentences are currently taken from sites von Ahn thinks should be translated anyway, such as English Wikipedia articles without equivalents in Spanish.

Multiple students translate the same sentence; software compares those results to settle on a final translation. After many sentences are put through this process, they are combined to create a translation of an entire document. The results, says von Ahn, are better than an automated translation but typically just short of professional quality.

Duolingo?s translation service is currently free, but by early next year the company intends to begin charging for ?rush jobs? that have a deadline. Von Ahn says Duolingo will ask for less than the five to 20 cents a word that professional translators charge. The service is in pilot tests with a big media company, he says.

An inexpensive translation service could solve some big problems, particularly for newspapers in U.S. cities with large Hispanic populations. In August, for instance, the Hartford Courant launched a Spanish-?language edition. But it was produced almost entirely using Google Translate. The results, which were spotty, drew negative reactions. (The newspaper later abandoned the idea.)

This isn?t the first time von Ahn has found a clever way to distribute small tasks among many people to solve a challenge, an approach he dubs human computation. He created something called the ESP Game, which turned labeling computer images into an online challenge. Google licensed that technology for its search engine and later also acquired ReCaptcha, a system Von Ahn created to help digitize blurry old books. Those distorted letters a website will sometimes ask you to copy to show you are human? That?s ReCaptcha getting you to decipher text a computer can?t.

Duolingo?s design is inspiring others to look for new ways to apply human computation in education. ?I think Duolingo is incredibly exciting,? says Dan Weld, a professor of computer science at the University of Washington who helped organized a workshop last summer on how to use crowdsourcing in education.

Weld thinks such methods could, for instance, turn students into a workforce that could correct or score the work of other students learning online. That could overcome a major shortcoming of massive open online courses, or MOOCs, which are encountering problems grading the work of tens of thousands of students.

There?s a ?groundswell? in online education, says Weld. ?But a lot of it is prepackaged video clips and other things we tried a long time ago that didn?t go anywhere. We need more power and personalization.? Achieving that solely with software is unlikely, he says, but properly directed crowds could provide the necessary intelligence.

Von Ahn has his own ideas along these lines. For example, he hopes to use the work of students who are learning computer languages online at places like Codecademy (see ?Startups Aim to Make Coding Fun?). ?You could imagine something with programming, maybe finding bugs in software as part of a course,? he says. ?We may try it.??

Thor Industries says competition weighs on 1Q

JACKSON CENTER, Ohio (AP) ? Thor Industries Inc.'s shares fell in after-hours trading Monday after the world's largest recreational vehicle maker and a major builder of commercial buses and ambulances said it is struggling with tough competition, price discounting and uncertain economic conditions.

The company, based in Jackson Center, Ohio, reported after the market closed that it earned $31 million, or 58 cents per share, for its fiscal first quarter that ended Oct. 31. That's up from $22.4 million, or 41 cents per share, earned in the first quarter last year.

Thor said the most recent quarter includes about $1.6 million in one-time costs for management changes and a legal settlement, which reduced its earnings per share by 2 cents.

The company's total revenue increased 30 percent to $875.6 million on stronger RV sales and a stable bus market.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting the company to earn 63 cents per share, adjusting for one-time items, on revenue of $876.8 million.

CEO Bob Martin said the company was pleased with its revenue growth and profitability during the first quarter, but said its results were affected by a competitive environment and the one-time expenses. He also said the intense competition has led to increased discounting that is hurting its sales and margins.

Thor will attend the largest RV tradeshow of the year this week and will assess the level of dealer confidence as it heads into the early retail show season in January.

Although the company has seen a recent upturn in demand, company chairman Peter Orthwein said that Thor remains cautious given the overall economic uncertainty and competitive pressure.

Shares fell $2.93, about 7 percent, to $40.67 in after-hours trading following the news. Its stock had gained 88 cents to close regular trading at $43.60.

'Two and a Half Men' star calls show 'filth'

Matt Hoyle / CBS / Warner Bros

Angus T. Jones, Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer star in "Two and a Half Men."

By Jordan Zakarin and Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

At this point, it might be best to turn "Two and a Half Men"?into a reality show.?Less than two years removed from?Charlie Sheen's infamous meltdown that saw him removed from the CBS?Chuck Lorre?comedy, the show's young star,?Angus T. Jones?-- the half-man in the show's title -- has blasted the series as "filth" and suggested that people should stop watching.

More from THR: Miley Cyrus to Romance Jake on 'Two and a Half Men'

"Jake from 'Two and a Half Men'?means nothing. He is a non-existent character," Jones says in a video for the?Forerunner Christian Church, which is based in Fremont, Calif. "If you watch 'Two and a Half Men,' please stop watching 'Two and a Half Men.' I'm on 'Two and a Half Men'?and I don't want to be on it. Please stop watching it and filling your head with filth. People say it?s just entertainment. Do some research on the effects of television and your brain, and I promise you you?ll have a decision to make when it comes to television, especially with what you watch."

Jones continues with the testimonial, intimating that the show is part of the plan of "the enemy" -- presumably Satan. He adds, "If I am doing any harm, I don't want to be here. I don't want to be contributing to the enemy's plan ... You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that. I know I can't. I'm not OK with what I'm learning, what the bible says and being on that television show."

Jones, 19,?gave a testimony?in October at the Voice of Prophecy in Los Angeles, where he attends services.

Jones earns about $350,000 per episode; in May he received a salary bump -- along with co-stars?Jon Cryer?and?Ashton Kutcher?-- when?Men?was renewed for a 10th season.

Jones' comments mark the latest brouhaha for "Men," which in addition to the Sheen debacle also saw former showrunner?Lee Aronsohn?step down after he came under fire for comments he made to?THR?about female-driven shows at a Toronto screenwriting conference.

"Two and a Half Men"?producer Warner Bros. Television declined comment.
