MUSCATINE, Iowa ? A young blogger helped a local organization
become all atwitter over social media Thursday night.
The Women?s Connection, a non-profit organization, invited
Cassie Boorn, a 24-year-old blogger from Galva, Ill., to speak at
Cocktails and Connections, a networking event at the Whispering
Pines Golf Course, 1963 N. Tipton Road.
Boorn spoke to about 80 women about the importance of accepting
the everchanging social media landscape.
Before she spoke, Boorn led the attendees in a networking
activity. The women had to talk to the people at their table and
make connections with them.
Boorn said to have questions ready, choose one interesting thing
about yourself for the other person to remember, and know what you
need to take away from the connection you?re making.
?Relationships can be built on Twitter and social media
outlets,? Boorn told the crowd.
Boorn focused her presentation on Twitter. When asked how many
in the crowd use Twitter, only several raised their hands. She then
gave advice on how to get started and who to follow.
Boorn said she noticed that
?people are able to connect more comfortably on Twitter.?
?But connect (with them) in a meaningful way,? Boorn said.
Dr. Jill Bjerke, 63, of Davenport, raised her hand when Boorn
asked who uses Twitter.
?If used properly, it can be a great marketing tool,? Bjerke
said.
Bjerke said she uses the social-media site to inform people on
things she thinks they should know.
?It?s an easy way to learn and send out information,? Bjerke
said.
Boorn started blogging as a junior at St. Ambrose University.
Boorn, who works from home as the social media coordinator at
DeVries PR, a New York-based communications agency, attends five to
six blogging conferences a year.
?I do a few national speaking engagements, but I tend to do more
local networking ones,? Boorn said.
Colleen Rafferty, the executive director of the Women?s
Connection, said that Boorn came to her to become a member of the
organization.
?We had an antiquated website and she has helped us update it
and become more involved in social media,? Rafferty said. ?We?re
tip-toeing into Twitter with her help.?
Rafferty added that through these social media outlets, Boorn is
helping the organization connect more with younger women.
?For those in attendance, and for anyone that couldn?t make it,
Boorn said the most important message is to just experiment with
the site.
?Don?t be afraid of it,? she said. ?There?s a lot of stuff to
figure out, but a lot of it works for you.?
