Windows Team Uses RAID for 1.1 PB Storage Solution

ANDOVER, Mass., April 18 ? RAID Incorporated, an end-to-end customized solutions provider in HPC, big data, and virtualized environments, announced today that the Windows Team at Microsoft recently used RAID Inc.'s 4U 60-Bay SAS/SATA EBOD (enterprise-class JBOD) devices with its Windows Server 2012 Datacenter operating system to build a cost-effective, highly available, high-performance scalable storage solution and deliver new Windows builds to quality assurance teams across the company.

The Windows Team is currently using 14 of RAID Inc.'s 4U 60-Bay SAS/SATA EBOD drive enclosures with 60 3-terabyte near-line serial-attached SCSI disks, which provide the team with 1.1 petabytes of storage. Ultimately, there will be 20 of these servers in place, providing 1.5 petabytes of storage, and when its Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces infrastructure is complete, the team will be able to reduce the total number of servers that manage storage from 120 to 20.

Jeremy Russell, Senior Development Lead, U.S. Windows Engineering Team at Microsoft, was quoted as saying, "With Storage Spaces, we have the functionality of a SAN without the cost of a SAN." Russell goes on to say, "We're able to use commodity hardware to achieve the same functionality at a far lower cost."

RAID Inc. is one of the companies that has worked with Microsoft throughout the development of Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces and has fully achieved certification. "Our current line of certified and cost-effective EBOD solutions combined with Storage Spaces is helping Microsoft to get more capabilities for every storage dollar all the while reducing the overall amount of physical storage," said Bob Picardi, CEO of RAID Inc.

RAID Inc. is committed to developing newer hardware technology in support of Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces. The road map will include EBODs with 12GB sas backplane with higher density and smaller front print for both SSD and spinning disk technologies. Also, the introduction of PCI-E SSD EBOD will be launched later this year as well.
