400 jobs coming for Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. - It's billed as the next generation health and rehabilitation community, and it's headed for Kokomo.

That's great news for a community that is still trying to recover from the great recession.

A new 67,000-square-foot facility that will cater to assisted living residents with both short- and long-term rehabilitation care is headed for the city's west side.

The Cicero-based company, Mainstreet Property Group, said the new facility will create 300 construction jobs and 100 more permanent positions.

"We need more jobs here," said Kokomo resident Carol Bowlin. "We have a lot of people who need work and I think it's a very good thing."

The mayor will say any good jobs are welcome, but in a community that relies so heavily on the automotive industry, this, he said, will help diversify the economy.

"Most of them are rehabilitation specialists, doctors, nurses. It's in the health care field, which is nice," said Mayor Greg Goodnight.

Kokomo resident Judy Barnett said the new facility is welcome in her town.

"I think it'll fit right in," Barnett said. "We need more facilities for people that are getting older."

The facility is expected to open in the fall of 2013.
