Sponsors of the first East Bay Innovation Awards recently threw a party at Oakland's Fox Theater to celebrate local cutting-edge innovators and businesses.

Although many Oakland companies were in the list of finalists and also helped sponsor the event, Berkeley, Emeryville and San Leandro also participated in the awards and were among the winners. Keeping with the theme of innovation, all of the award trophies were "printed" on a 3D printer at Studio Fathom in Oakland.? The Berkeley High School Jazz Combo provided improvisational music during the pre-ceremony reception.

The East Bay Economic Development Alliance spearheaded the Jan. 31 event with the SF Business Times and several of its major partners helped sponsor the inaugural event. These included Chevron, B of A, Wells Fargo, Bayer and Pandora.

The East Bay EDA is a public/private partnership serving Alameda and Contra Costa Counties? and working "to establish the East Bay as a world-recognized place to grow businesses, attract capital, and create quality jobs.

"We work with all of our partners to help make the East Bay a healthy and vibrant economy," Karen Engle, executive director of the East Bay EDA, said. "One of the ways we do that is by telling the story of companies and innovation right here in the East Bay. So the Innovation Awards are a way for us to find those companies that can help us tell that story."

She added that the Legacy Award that went to Novartis was based on the pioneering work of biotech firms Cetus and Chiron, which became part of Novaris over the last decade.

Here is a summary of the Awards and winners:

Legacy Award - Novartis

Catalyst Award - Berkeley Skydeck

Business and Education Partnership - Bayer HealthCare

Industry Category Winners -

Pandora (Information / Communication Technology)
Tesla Motors (Advanced Manufacturing)
Ecologic Brands (Clean Technology)
Livescribe (Engineering and Design)

Should Your Site Have an Online Newsroom? | Phoenix Internet ...

Ever since Google?s algorithm change that stresses the need for fresh and frequent quality content, companies around the world have been exploring the idea of adding an online newsroom to their web design. Many sites already have a page that contains press releases or other updates about their company, or a media center, but few are optimizing these pages.

In a 2013 newsroom report on how the world?s top 100 brands are using online newsrooms, statistics show these interesting facts:

  • 98% of brands have an online newsroom
  • 65% of brands have links on their homepages directly to their newsrooms
  • 51% fail to show quality images on their newsroom pages
  • 38% of online newsrooms lack functions such as search, tagging and categories
  • 35% fail to keep their newsrooms up-to-date
  • 29% use video in news releases

One of the major blocks to success that the report showed was due to the fact that, traditionally, SEO and PR have had separate agendas, yet ultimately with the same cause. Due to the growth in social media and use of search engines, the two are becoming more entwined than ever before. While these two areas have the same goal?to generate leads for their company?they typically have different ways of going about it. In order to make an online newsroom successful, they have to work together to achieve their common goal.

The real benefit of online newsrooms is that they present a new opportunity to connect and engage with your audience. These news stories can help to drive traffic to your site by way of search engines and well-maintained social media sites. A good online newsroom has the potential to raise your visibility and help even a small business grow fast.

If you?re interested in revamping your website design with the addition of an online newsroom, CyberMark of Arizona can help you! Contact us today to learn more about the services we offer.

State of the Union: NASA's 'Mohawk Guy' will sit with Michelle Obama

At the State of the Union address tomorrow night, First Lady Michelle Obama will be joined by NASA's 'Mohawk Guy,' the Iranian-American Bobak Ferdowsi who attracted attention during the landing of NASA's latest Mars mission, the Curiosity rover.

Life is good for NASA's "Mohawk Guy." He became world famous after helping NASA's huge Curiosity rover make a dramatic landing on Mars, and now he'll sit with first lady Michelle Obama during Tuesday's State of the Union address.

The Iranian-American Mohawk Guy ? whose name is Bobak Ferdowsi ? will sit in the first lady's box to highlight President Barack Obama's call for more visas for skilled immigrants in the fields of math, science and engineering, Southern California Public Radio reported?Monday (Feb. 11).

A White House official confirmed the news to SPACE.com.

Ferdowsi will be joined in the box by a number of other people from various walks of life, whose presence may help the president drive home points about some of his policy proposals. The speech begins Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST (Feb. 12; 0200 GMT Wednesday).

Ferdowsi's American flag-inspired hairstyle ? a red- and blue-streaked mohawk set off by white stars on the side of his head ? rocketed the mission flight director to international fame during Curiosity's nail-biting landing?on the night of Aug. 5.

In a complex maneuver that had never been tried before on another planet, the 1-ton rover was lowered to the Martian surface on cables by a rocket-powered sky crane, which then flew off and crash-landed intentionally a safe distance away.

The president even gave Ferdowsi a?public shout-out shortly after the landing.

"I understand there's a special?mohawk guy?that's working on the mission," President Obama said in a congratulatory call to Curiosity's handlers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Aug. 13. "He's been one of the many stars of the show last Sunday night. I in the past thought about getting a mohawk myself."

Ferdowsi is not a mohawk loyalist, however. He said he has tried out various hairstyles over the years to mark major milestones in the development of Curiosity's $2.5 billion mission, which seeks to determine if the Red Planet can, or ever could, support microbial life.

Curiosity carries 10 science instruments, 17 cameras and several other tools to aid in this quest. Over the weekend, it completed a major milestone, drilling a 2.5-inch-deep (6.35 centimeters) hole in a Martian rock and collecting samples. No robot had ever done this on Mars or any other planet before.

Ferdowsi also marched in President Obama's inaugural parade last month, along with life-size models of Curiosity and NASA's Orion manned space capsule.

HBT: Grace begins four-month jail sentence

Mark Grace was sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to felony endangerment and misdemeanor driving under the influence, and the former Cubs and Diamondbacks first baseman turned announcer began serving his sentence yesterday.

Grace is at Maricopa County Jail, which is famous for sheriff Joe Arpaio?s tent city that houses non-violent offenders, and ABC-15 in Arizona reports that he?ll be granted work release along with two years of supervised probation.

Obviously serving four months in jail is never fun and Arpaio?s place is well known for being particularly rough, but as Calcaterra pointed out at the time of Grace?s sentencing at least by going in now he avoids being stuck outside in the middle of an Arizona summer.

Meatless Mondays: Vegan roasted banana and chocolate cake ...

Meatless Mondays seem like a Godsend, especially if you?re a dessert lover like me. I?ll start the day with dark chocolate pancakes topped with fresh berry compote and drizzled with nutella, have souffl?s and more chocolate for lunch, and an apple & rhubarb crumble for dinner? Life will be perfect if these were calorie-free, but alas they are not and I?ve been on a mission to make desserts slightly more healthy, so I can eat a bit more than just one slice at a time.

Being a uni student means always being on a budget, and never having enough ingredients to bake fancy things but, I?m not letting that stop me. After scoring an amazing 200g bar of lindt baking chocolate on sale for ?2 at Waitrose, alongside coconuty things from Freshways, I finally managed to put my creative baking hat to good use with a vegan banana cake turned brownie. It was moist, bittersweet and almost sinless. My housemates certainly loved it and were amazed when I admitted it had no butter or eggs in it. Here?s the recipe:

Vegan roasted banana and chocolate cake

240 grams plain flour
60 grams (or 4 tbsp) rolled oats (optional)
230 grams sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
? teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
2 ripe bananas
400 ml low-fat coconut milk
? tablespoon of chia seeds (optional)
? cup coconut oil (or olive/canola/vegetable oil)
150 grams chopped up dark chocolate (or milk)

Preheat the oven to 175 degrees.

While waiting for the oven to heat up, put the two bananas into the oven. Leave it for about 10-15 minutes until the skin is black and banana juices start to ooze out. Take out and mash. Or alternatively, mash very ripe bananas.

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and cocoa. In a separate bowl, whisk together bananas, chia seeds, coconut milk and oil. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and whisk until just combined. Fold in the chocolate; do not over mix.

Spread the batter evenly into the baking tray/loaf pan and bake for 50 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out nearly clean with a few crumbs clinging to it. Rotate the pan halfway through baking time. Leave it in for an additional 10 minutes if you prefer it to be less gooey. Let cool then sift with powdered sugar.

Jazz the cake up with more dark chocolate and a few shots of your favourite liquor. I?d suggest Malibu if you want to go all-out with the coconut flavor, or Cointreau for that tinge of citrus or if you only have baileys, just add it in. The extra liquid will make the cake super moist and tasty.

Google renames Circles icon on Google+ to ?Find people?, lists who you talk to in Gmail and its other products

Google on Monday rolled out a very subtle but significant change to its Google+ service. The Circles icon has been renamed to ?Find people.?

Does this mean Google is getting rid of Circles on Google+? No, it simply means the company realized that new users have no idea what Circles are and therefore aren?t going to click on the icon when they?re looking around the interface to figure out where to go to add their friends and colleagues. Google finally woke up and smelled the coffee: most Facebook and Twitters users have no idea what circles are.

Here?s what the new feature looks like:

google find people 730x625 Google renames Circles icon on Google+ to Find people, lists who you talk to in Gmail and its other products

On the left-hand side, you can see the new ?Find People? icon. I couldn?t find it at first because I had removed it from my list: if I need to add someone to Google+, I typically just search for them.

As you can see on the right-hand side, Google+ now lists suggestions based on your existing connections, but it also lets you add people directly from your Gmail contacts, your workplace, and your college or university. Aside from Gmail, Google also says it will show you people you?re already talking to on other Google products, but it didn?t reveal which ones.

If you?re not seeing the suggestions you?re hoping for, Google+ still lets you manually look for people thanks to school and workplace filters. You can also look by using other email accounts.

Again, Circles aren?t going away. You can still click on the ?Your circles? icon and use the circle editor to see all of your circles and decide who belongs in each one.

This update is available to everyone now, but Google seems to be hinting it?s the first step of a bigger set of changes yet to come. Given how closely Google+ is tied to the rest of the company?s products and services, we can expect changes being made across the board, not just in the company?s social network.

FDA rebuff deals big blow to Novo Nordisk's U.S. hopes

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - U.S. regulators dealt a major blow to Novo Nordisk's hopes for its new long-acting insulin Tresiba by demanding the Danish drugmaker conduct additional clinical tests to assess potential heart risks.

Novo, the world's biggest insulin maker, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had requested additional data from a dedicated cardiovascular outcomes trial before it would consider approving Tresiba and related product Ryzodeg.

The drugmaker - which is banking on Tresiba to keep it in the lead in diabetes care - said on Sunday it did not expect to be able to provide the data during 2013. Analysts said the FDA's stance could delay Tresiba until 2015 or 2016.

"They will have to make new studies and that will delay the launch of Tresiba in the U.S. by two to three years," Sydbank analyst Soren Hansen said.

"It is a really bad situation ... I expect the share will fall significantly on Monday."

The setback for Tresiba, also known as degludec, is good news for rival makers of insulin medicines, including France's Sanofi, whose Lantus product is under threat from Novo's newer ultra-long-lasting treatment.

Most investors had expected a green light from the U.S. watchdog, following a positive recommendation from an advisory panel to the FDA last November.

Optimism about Tresiba and Ryzodeg - which combines degludec with another formulation of insulin - was further boosted by approval in Europe, where the drugs won a final go-ahead last month. They have also been approved in Japan.

Tresiba and Ryzodeg have been widely tipped by analysts to become multibillion-dollar-a-year sellers worldwide.

CONFOUNDS EXPECTATIONS

The FDA's decision to issue Novo with a so-called "complete response letter" therefore confounded consensus expectations. Such letters are issued when the U.S. agency determines that an application cannot be approved in its existing form.

"We are surprised and disappointed to receive this letter, but we acknowledge this decision by the FDA and will work with the agency to determine the best path forward to completing the review," Novo Chief Executive Lars Rebien Sorensen said in a statement.

Concerns about the cardiovascular safety of Tresiba are not new, but Novo and most analysts had thought the issue had been resolved.

The FDA advisers meeting last year expressed concern about a trend toward higher incidence of adverse heart events with the new insulin than with older ones. However, the differences seen in 16 large clinical trials were not statistically significant.

In addition to calling for new trials on Tresiba's heart safety, the FDA said approval for Tresiba and Ryzodeg could not be granted until violations cited in a December 12 warning letter had been resolved.

Novo said the FDA's decision not to grant approval at the present time was not expected to impact significantly its financial forecasts for the current year.

The big concern of investors, though, is that a lengthy delay in getting Tresiba launched in the world's biggest drugs market will seriously undermine Novo's ability to stay ahead of rivals such as Sanofi and Eli Lilly.
